Delftshaven

Painting of Delftshaven, Netherlands

I am pleased to be able to show you my most recent painting, Delftshaven (Netherlands). This is actually constructed from my photograph which I took while there in 2011. The photo was only a small digital image, and some of the details were not easy to make out, which gave me the opportunity to improvise in places.

I was attracted to the geometry of the boats masts, along with the linear perspective they created in receding into the vanishing point slightly left of the the centre of the painting. Though I had edited my photo, as it was no doubt a gloomy grey day. I’d changed the gloom for the serene blue of the sky and water. I didn’t find this interesting to paint though, so I added clouds, and details describing the shadows and reflections in the water.

I have come to realise that I do like paintings featuring water, which has made me think about painting watery themes more often. The manner in which the water can be conveyed are many and varied, but I think my preferred way is using line (not surprising).

Delftshaven, acrylic on canvas, 70 x 70cm, €740

My photo of Delftshaven. I omitted the bike, the ramp, and the cranes.

  1. I like how you painted the details that interested you and then made it your own! I think that is what makes great art. We paint all that captivates us and combine that with our own ideas, and it makes sense.
