For lovely acrylic paint work on canvas, Liz Allen is a fantastic artist to follow. Another UK native who followed the sun to the south of Portugal, Allen now lives and works from Monchique in the centre of the Algarve. Her work is vibrant, bold, colourful, and unique and Liz uses a variety of techniques to create each piece which usually features buildings and homes. Visit her studio while exploring the Algarve, or check out her work on her Facebook page.

Monchique Street (large version)

Another version of Monchique Street. I wanted to paint a version of this scene in dark blues and purples. It worked out… more or less!I used a variety of stencils to create depth and texture. I’m not big on brush marks, which are usually used for creating texture and depth. I just can’t. Unless it’s…

Small watercolours series

I’ve been doing some small watercolour paintings over the past few weeks. Mainly because watercolour works well in warmer weather, not having to wait long for layers to dry. It’s also good for visitors who want to take a small painting back home in their luggage. Until now, I felt unsure whether I really like…

Monchique Street… latest painting

I have to confess I did this painting from a photo which I took when walking along a street which I don’t very often walk along. I was struck by this rather cute and pleasing scene. The calçada’d street receding into the distance, the typical mix of Portuguese styles of urban buildings, and a convenient…
