From time to time I feel like making sketches of the garden, here in Monchique. For me the garden is like an extension of the landscapes of small farms in this area. I like the rather random way that the land is divided up, and each section with its different textured and structured plants growing on it. Some areas are empty, some over grown.
( Most of my vegetable patch is overgrown this year due to my travelling to the UK at crucial planting times. Also a ´bad back´ which doesn´t allow lunging and heaving the earth around in preparation for planting. ).
The randomness of the garden arrangements gives an opportunity to use it as a starting point for some abstraction. I´m not sure what will come of these ideas, so far they are small painted sketches, using acrylic paint and Posca pens.
So here they are now…

Last week I had a mini break to Lisbon, to visit the Paula Rego Museum and an impromptu visit to Banksy´s gallery there. Only managed to make two sketches, of an unexpected subject, the Casa de Alentejo which was at the end of the street where I was staying. I am hoping that I will do a painting from my sketches, but for now, here are the photos:

Hi Liz, I greatly admire your garden sketches, they have a character and life about them and a level of abstraction that, for me, is not so evident in what maybe your less spontaneous work. A shame not to be able to see the work in person. All the best Andrew Ängsholmsvägen 83,149 92 NynäshamnSweden Mobile: +46 705252341

Thank you very much, Andrew. I appreciate and respect your opinions and comments. I have to agree that much of my work is carried out in a less spontaneous manner.
