A couple of new paintings

Not quite finished… Here is a video I posted on Instagram a couple of days ago, showing what is going on in my studio, what is being produced in there.

The first upsidedown painting is from my sketch of Pomar Velho, and the one on the easel is another Monchique view, across the road from the first one. These are executed in water-based oil paints, and the reason for this is that I do like the luminosity of this medium, compared to acrylic which looks flat in comparison.

And here they are finished…

Two chairs looking out to sea, Alvor
That said, I have already started a new acrylic painting from a drawing I did in Alvor.
I noticed that the drawing’s components were conveniently arranged in thirds, as in “the rule of thirds”.

  1. The thirds neatly positioned
  2. discovering something didn’t add up… the chairs seem too small… or perhaps the canvas the wrong proportions?
  3. After over painting the chairs numerous times, I tried this approach with paper cut out chairs
  4. now the chairs are blocked in and have become abstracted by the process
  5. Conclusion: when a painting seems to go so well at first, there is always trouble round the corner 😅. I hope to show you the finished result next time.
