Recent paintings…

I’ve been doing more watercolour paintings recently, though I haven’t retired from acrylic painting altogether. Acrylic is more versatile than watercolour in my opinion, and both mediums have their virtues. I find it easier to create effects with watercolour using the water to do the work.
I learnt watercolour accidentally, when I was asked to run a course in watercolour by the Adult Education head at Seaford College. She assumed that since I could paint, then I would be able to teach watercolour! I bought a really good book, which taught me everything I know about it pretty much. I particularly enjoy the way certain colours granulate due to the paint’s pigment size. And this is even better when two granulating colours combine. But there is no turning back with watercolour when and if you need to change a part of the painting. I have my ways, but they aren’t traditional ways!

With acrylic painting, it seems anything goes, and being versatile you can apply it how you like, and it will stick to the support, and if you don’t like it, just paint over it. I like that too, as it leaves a lot of room for experimentation and freedom to make all kinds of “mistakes” though not really mistakes, rather something you’d choose to change.
