About “Summer night’s drive home”

and the use of dots

The scene depicted in this painting evokes a magical and perhaps a mystic order experience. Along a winding road, through the foliage of Cork Oaks, lit up by the car’s headlamps, the viewer is transported into the warmth and atmosphere of this summer night at around midnight in August.

Like a celestial map of stars scattered across the night sky, the dots create patterns of light and shadow. The dots are not random, each one is carefully placed to evoke the sensation of light filtering through the dense foliage of the surrounding trees.

In this painting, I use dots of varying sizes and intensities to create a sense of depth and dappling light through the leaves and branches of the trees. The painting is all about the feeling of light, but at night time, like the dots of stars, the pin-points of light dapple and move through the trees.

I hope this painting will transport the viewer through this summer night, passing through these old and unusually shaped trees, gently moving with the warm night breeze, all the time dots of light shifting their patterns in the branches of the Cork Oaks.
