New painting – Raining at the Gallery

The subject of my blog post is this painting

I´ve just completed a new painting, Raining at the Gallery, or Raining in Monchique. It is based on my photograph of my exhibition opening at the Galeria Snto Antonio in Monchique in March 2023. It was late afternoon, and a wet March day. The colours of the buildings and streets were muted and soft. I was very pleased to be having this exhibition, and was gazing around with almost disbelief that it had actually happened. Then I suddenly thought, I should be taking some photos of this event, and quickly snapped my camera around as my neighbour and her son came up the gallery steps, as she was folding away her umbrella.

Later, about a month ago, the idea of making a sketch from the photo came up, and I had a feeling of excitement and anticipation about the idea of turning it into a painting, partly due to the line drawing I´d made. (I like line, almost as much as colour!) Although I made good progress at first, the usual formal problems turned up and needed resolving.

It took a bit longer than I imagined, maybe due to the close tonal values which needed working out, as well as the fact the painting was no longer just a line drawing… I´m still enjoying using textural devices, (such as stencils) as opposed to using a more or less flat colour as I´d done for many years.

More new paintings coming … soonish. I have quite a few on the go at the moment, as I tend to want to get started on a new one almost as soon as I have the idea for it. This is a new way of working for me, as I used to work strictly on one painting at a time.

I hope you enjoy this painting and don´t forget that you are welcome to visit my studio and see more paintings in the flesh.
